Fellow Lions, Lioness
and Leos,
I wish to thank you
at this time for the continued
support you have given to the
Vitamin A Program. It was in
the fall of 1996 when William Brozek was District Governor
that the program got started.
The program has been maintained
as a continued project
since that time. It is my understanding
that this is the
longest term of Vitamin A
distribution in the world, a
great job well done fellow
Lions, Lioness and Leos. You
originally started with providing
168,000 children of Nicaragua
with Vitamin A.
Shortly after that the number
was increased to 400,000 this
is reaching near 50% of the
population of children five
years and under. When the
program was first started the
Vitamin A deficiency, on a
National average was 31.3%
because of what the Lions
have done the National average
has been reduced to 9.1%.
Field studies have
shown an association between
Vitamin A status and three of
the leading causes of childhood
mortality: measles, acute
respiratory illness and diarrhea.
It is estimated that a 20
to 25 Percent reduction in
infant and child deaths can be
achieved through Vitamin A
interventions alone. Because
of you UNICEF has estimated
over 5000 children?s lives have
been saved plus an unknown
number of children did not go
blind because of the lack of
Vitamin A.
The Lions who have
participated in the program
have done a great job. Would
those clubs that have not
given to the program please
take the time at each meeting
to pass a bank around to the
club members asking them to
please contribute to the program.
And those Clubs that
have given so generously
please continue. This program
costs the Lions about
$14,000.00 a year but the
results are outstanding. The
new club officers are taking
office in July and the budget is
to be made out shortly after
the new officers take over.
Please include the Vitamin A
in your budget or better yet
pass the bank for Vitamin A.
If you would like for
me to join you at your meeting
and tell you the story
about Vitamin A including
the latest information I will be
more than happy to come.
Sincerely Yours, PDG Bill Davidson |
